LET'S EXPLORE SECOND LIFE!
Or weird trash and fun stuff to see in Second Life!
I recently realized I had 20 years worth of landmarks and I had no clue what I was sitting on. Thus, I decided to explore the grid a bit and see if there was anything new to see. To be honest, this is a very personal list. I would definitely recommend checking out the Official Second Life Destination Guide as it has a great deal of interesting places. I have specifically chosen places that are not listed there on this list. This list is an active document, so I’ll be updating it and adding stuff as things happen, or when I get bored. Everything is listed under a common category. Click on the links for a SLURL to each location.
Enjoy!
Orientation Places:
Welcome Hub: Where you start. There should be a Mentor about ninety percent of the time, or join the Second Friends for Life group and ask whatever you want there . You should start here. The tutorial is also very useful, as are the the portals to other places.
Caledon Oxbridge Gateway: The official starting place for Caledon, the first steampunk/Victorian sim started in Second Life. Has an excellent tutorial showing all of the features of SL.
Ahern Infohub: The grandaddy of all social places. Has been entertaining weirdos since 2004. Also, check out the attached Nova Albion, a city on the site of the first sims in SL and Luna Oaks Galleria Mall, the first official mall in SL. It’s a ghost town now, but you can see a bit of Old SL.
Social Hubs:
Muddy’s: Cool club with boomer rock and country music. Very open to new people.
The Blarney Stone- Irish Pub: Fun newbie-friendly pub with live music.
Warehouse21: Very popular electronic music club. Always packed to capacity. Please note that it kicks anyone under 24 hours of age, as to avoid trolls.
Elysion: Get on your fancy gowns and such. This place is the fanciest club in SL. There is an entry fee of about 1800 Linden dollars to gain access to the sim, but the sim is gorgeous and there are active events.
Shopping:
Bare Rose: The OG store for everything in SL. Also, gives away free things every few minutes by raffle. Everyone has been here once.
Grendel’s Children, Dragons, Monsters and More: What doesn’t this place have? Lots of amazing avatars, from wolves to golems to dragons to whatever you can imagine. Lots of freebies, too. Just go crazy.
Official Builds:
Linden Village: One of the original orientation builds and a site for weekly office hours for Lindens back in the day. Great example of classical architecture.
Falmouth Hotel: Let’s get spooky. One of my favorite official Mole builds. A spooky hotel in the middle of Bay City, a large Linden-developed project. Check out the shrine to the Lindens on the top floors.
Channel Island Asylum: Even more spooky, a haunted asylum. Another great Mole build.
Boat Service to Pyri Fun Fair: Take a boat to a spooky Fun Fair created by the Moles. Check out the Tunnel of Love.
Nautilus Temple: Enjoy the marvels of the old world at this temple accessible by boat from Blake Sea. Watch out for the secret door.
Mount Ga’hal: Toss your friends into the volcano for fun! They will be stuck in lava or die when they hit the rim.
Old Second Life:
Ivory Tower of Prims: LEARN TO BUILD! Also, there is a lovely sandbox with rights to rez or create things here if you need a quiet place to relax.
Primitive Museum: See the relics of old SL. A private collection of things from 2003 to 2012, including a prim from founder Philip Linden.
Second Life Historical Museum: See pictures of how SL was in 2003. Also, collect the free Primitar avatar from the Second Life beta.
Governor Linden’s Mansion: The last remnants of the original 2003 builds. This place is older than most residents inworld. Check out the Wall of Beta users, including Eggy Lippman, who did everything in the beta.
The Beanstalk: You used to get a 1000 Linden bucks if you climbed this tricky tower without assistance, but now you can do it for bragging rights!
Harry’s GoKarts: One of the original sandboxes in Second Life. Race cars or just mess around.
Particle Lab: Learn how to make crazy particles with free scripts and demonstrations. Also, check out the beautiful caverns and park.
Peregrine Salon: Opposite the Particle Lab is the entertaining space and store of FlipperPA Peregrine and Jennyfur, members of Electric Sheep, which did most of the major corporate builds, including CSI.
Fun Stuff:
Vehicles:
Abbotts Aerodrome: The legendary first airport in SL, created by Cubey Terra. You can fly across Mainland from here, or even go skydiving. Have fun.
Honah Lee: The official start of the Blake Sea, over 50 sims for sailing connected by Linden channels across the entire grid. Drop a boat here and explore!
Hollywood Airport: One of the largest and oldest airports in SL. You can explore all of Blake Sea from this airport.
Georgean Test Track: Just a few minutes from Abbotts Aerodrome is my favorite race track in SL. Drop your car at the start and go racing!
Racers Island: Modern racetrack with free vehicles and a variety of tracks.
Virtual Rail Consortium Headquarters, Tulip Tree: Explore mainland in style through the SL railroads. This is the start of the official Second Life rail network.
Combat Sims:
Concord: Official Second Life Combat sim with bots. Shoot some zombies and such with the free guns here. Have fun!
Badlands: Active combat sim run by Guild of Limitless Crime. Open to all. Capture flags and avoid the scary bots!
Astral-Tek Store and Tulagi: Get a free tank or battleship and blow up some things! The largest hub for Vice combat, including infantry, tanks, battleships, and planes. Check out the tank arena upstairs with your friends. Do not engage WW2 war birds with modern weapons, or everyone will hate you. Otherwise, go nuts!
Weird Stuff:
Dawn Kingdom: Be a dinosaur or get devoured by one at this sim. There are fantastic avatars for sale, including massive dragons, or you can climb into the portal and see dinosaurs in the flesh. Also, check out the Castle Dracula experience by this creator, accessible here!
Home of the Weelanders & WeeWonders: Be a small cat in this small cat sim.
Shingo: Be a giant robot.
Resident Evil Mansion: You are now entering the world of survival horror.
Sarah’s Magic Kingdom: Mouse-themed rides and things to explore. Check out the Spooky Mansion ride!
WEDCOT Magic Kingdom: You know what it is.
International Spaceflight Museum/Spaceport Alpha: One of the original museums in SL. Display of rockets throughout history.
Roleplay:
Caledon Guvnah’s Mansion: Enjoy the peak of Victorian living in Caledon, the first steampunk grid in the sim.
Fun Recreations:
LME: “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.” Recreation of Mos Eisley from Star Wars. Check out the free avatars.
Great N’avi Forest Pandora Navitar: Cool recreation of the forests of Pandora from Avatar. Play a blue smurf or an evil colonist.
Taris: Another Star Wars roleplay sim. Has the best Ewok avatar in SL. Also, check out the museum of Star Wars roleplay here.
Stargate Sanctuary/A Place to Visit: Beautifully rendered recreation of the Cheyenne Mount Complex from Stargate. The Gate actually takes you to different sims and has complete dialing sequence.
New Yavin: Fight with light sabers or take off in a starfighter at this Jedi sim.
Forest Moon of Endor: Yub Yub!
Kashium Roleplay Community: Deep Space Nine recreation.
Troll Places:
Social Island 10: Yell at silly people and spam loud noises to your heart’s content. Warning— this place is very crowded, laggy, and has some crazy people. That is the charm of it.
Boardroom Infohub: Yell at silly, awful people in Voice Chat. This sim was originally meant to be a site to show off the benefits of Second Life to businesses, but got inhabited by the worst of the worst in SL. It’s fun.
Shameless Self-Promotion:
Say hi at the Pirate Cat Navy Embassy in Caledon Victorian City. You can also sign a recruitment form here as well. There’s free booze and snacks! Have fun!

I love the "Troll Places" section! 🤣
